Types of Artificial Insemination
Before diving into the process, it's important to know that there are different types of artificial insemination:
- IUI (Intrauterine Insemination): The most common type — washed sperm is placed directly into the uterus.
- ICI (Intracervical Insemination): Sperm is placed at the entrance of the cervix, closer to how natural conception occurs. Often used at home with donor sperm kits.
- IVI (Intravaginal Insemination): Sperm is deposited in the vagina, the most basic form and closest to natural intercourse.

Step-by-Step: The IUI Process
Step 1: Initial Consultation and Testing
Your journey begins with a consultation at a fertility clinic. Your doctor will review your medical history, perform blood tests to assess hormone levels, and may request an ultrasound to check ovarian reserve and uterine structure. A semen analysis will also be performed if using a partner's sperm.
Step 2: Ovarian Monitoring (With or Without Medication)
IUI can be performed in a natural cycle (tracking ovulation without drugs) or a stimulated cycle (using fertility medications like Clomid or injectable gonadotropins to stimulate egg production). If medications are used, you'll have regular ultrasound appointments to monitor follicle development.
Step 3: Triggering Ovulation
Once monitoring shows that one or more follicles have reached the right size, an HCG trigger shot (or LH surge monitoring) is used to time ovulation precisely. The insemination is then scheduled approximately 24–36 hours after the trigger.
Step 4: Sperm Preparation (Washing)
On the day of the procedure, a sperm sample is provided (either by a partner or from a sperm bank). The sample undergoes a process called sperm washing, where sperm is separated from seminal fluid and concentrated. This is essential for IUI, as introducing unwashed semen directly into the uterus can cause cramping and complications.
Step 5: The Insemination Procedure
The procedure itself takes only a few minutes. You'll lie on an exam table, and a speculum is inserted — similar to a cervical smear exam. A thin, flexible catheter is passed through the cervix into the uterus, and the prepared sperm sample is gently deposited. Most people describe it as mild pressure or mild cramping.
Step 6: The Two-Week Wait
After insemination, you'll typically rest for 10–15 minutes before going home. Then begins the "two-week wait" — the period before a pregnancy test can accurately detect pregnancy. This can be an emotionally challenging time, and it's important to have support in place.
Step 7: Pregnancy Test
Around 14 days after the procedure, a blood test (beta HCG) or home pregnancy test can confirm whether implantation was successful. Your clinic will advise on the exact timing.
